Hello everyone! We’re diving into the latest changes in the tech sphere that affect developers and users alike. Exciting times are ahead!
Google has officially rolled out user choice billing in the U.K., allowing developers on Google Play to use alternative billing methods. This monumental shift launches on March 29 and initially targets non-game developers.
For those opting for alternative billing, there’s a neat 4% discount on fees paid to Google, taking into account additional charges from third-party systems. This is a significant change from the usual 30% that Google typically garners on in-app transactions.
In a recent blog post, Google shared that over 90% of developers expressed satisfaction with their traditional billing system. Yet, the company recognized the desire for more payment options among some developers, and this update aims to facilitate that.
However, the story isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. This move is largely seen as a response to the scrutiny from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) back in 2022, which highlighted the dominating position Google and Apple hold over their app stores.
Following the CMA’s investigation, which examined the duopoly of these giants, Google had to propose user choice billing as part of the ongoing antitrust discussions, also stemming from feedback and consultations held with developers.
As part of a broader initiative, countries like the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan are already experiencing user choice billing, helping to open up competitive avenues for developers.
