Hello to all tech enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving into a quirky situation involving Waymo and their fleet of driverless cars.
Recently, it was reported that Waymo has been accumulating parking tickets like they’re going out of style. In San Francisco alone, these self-driving vehicles racked up nearly 600 tickets last year!
With over 300 autonomous vehicles navigating the streets, you might think they would easily follow all traffic laws. However, parking seems to present quite a challenge. The city of San Francisco is notorious for its strict parking regulations and readiness to hand out fines.
According to reports, Waymo’s cars received 589 citations totaling an eye-watering $65,065 in fines for violations ranging from blocking traffic to ignoring street cleaning signs. Yikes!
To put things into perspective, the city distributed a whopping 1.2 million parking tickets last year. So, it’s no wonder these high-tech rides found themselves in such predicaments.
A Waymo spokesperson mentioned that they are aware of the issue and are actively working on solutions. But until driverless technology reaches its full potential, it seems that these cars might continue to earn their share of penalties.
It’s interesting to note that these vehicles, just like human drivers, sometimes have to make quick decisions in tight spots. Whether choosing a loading zone to drop off passengers or ‘parking briefly’ between trips, it’s inevitable that they could encounter the same challenges we do on the road.
