Hello, tech enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving into a hot topic: voice cloning tools and their safety measures.
Recent findings from Consumer Reports reveal that many voice cloning tools lack the necessary safeguards to prevent misuse. Despite their growing popularity, these products come with a set of risks.
In a study covering offerings from six companies – Descript, ElevenLabs, Lovo, PlayHT, Resemble AI, and Speechify – it was found that only a couple of them, namely Descript and Resemble AI, have implemented any meaningful measures to prevent unauthorized voice cloning.
The others, however, simply rely on users confirming that they have the legal rights needed to clone a voice, which isn’t exactly a robust safeguard. Grace Gedye, a policy analyst at Consumer Reports, highlighted the potential for these tools to facilitate impersonation scams if companies don’t step up their security game.
In summary, while voice cloning can be exciting technology, it’s crucial for companies to prioritize safety to ensure it doesn’t become a tool for fraud.
