A hacker infiltrated the network of PowerSchool, a prominent U.S. edtech company, several months before its notorious December data breach. A newly released forensic report by the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike shines a light on this preemptive attack.

PowerSchool revealed, in a letter to its customers, that unauthorized activity occurred within its system as far back as August 2024. They confirmed that the breach was first detected only late December, right around holiday time.

Interestingly, the same compromised credentials utilized during the December incident were apparently used to access PowerSchool’s internal network from August 16 to September 17, 2024.
