The latest data showcases a staggering growth, with the count reaching 781 pending AI bills. This number surges past the total AI bills proposed throughout the entire year of 2024, which stood at 743. To put things in perspective, in 2023, lawmakers put forward less than 200 AI-related bills.
One might ask, what’s causing this whirlwind of activity? Much of this legislative frenzy can be attributed to the lack of federal action. Congress is yet to formulate a comprehensive AI governance framework, somewhat reminiscent of the European Union’s efforts with their AI Act.
Even as the clock ticks on, the Trump administration has shown a somewhat tepid approach to aggressively governing AI. An executive order was signed back in January, directing federal agencies to encourage AI development while avoiding ideological biases. However, significant Congressional AI legislation still awaits endorsement.
