Hello, tech enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving into an exciting partnership that’s set to revolutionize the electric vehicle landscape and renewable energy in India.
Infineon Technologies, a prominent semiconductor manufacturer from Germany, has joined forces with CDIL Semiconductors, a seasoned player in the Indian chip market.
This collaboration is aimed at harnessing new business opportunities while helping India shift towards electric mobility and renewable power.
With a massive population exceeding 1.4 billion, India is striving to boost its electric vehicle (EV) adoption from a mere 7-8% to an ambitious 30% by 2030.
The nation’s goal to increase non-fossil energy generation from 100GW to an impressive 500GW also underscores the urgency of developing a robust domestic ecosystem capable of supporting EVs and battery storage solutions.
To achieve these objectives, Infineon plans to supply wafers to CDIL, which will handle packaging and assembly operations at its Punjab facility.
Out of this partnership, they’re targeting multiple sectors, including light electric vehicles — from scooters to electric rickshaws — as well as renewable energy products such as solar inverters.
Initially, the partnership is set to produce MOSFETs which act as electronic switches, but there are plans to expand into producing IGBTs, crucial for high-voltage applications.
CDIL has an impressive annual production capacity of 600 million power semiconductor units, which they’ll adjust based on market demand.
Notably, the semiconductors will utilize advanced materials like silicon carbide and gallium nitride to enhance efficiency and power density.
This partnership marks Infineon’s first manufacturing venture in India, aiming to tap into the enormous potential of this evolving market.
As industry trends align, executives believe India is on the cusp of a significant acceleration toward electrification.
While Infineon has no immediate plans for establishing its own wafer manufacturing in India, it looks forward to nurturing additional collaborations in this vibrant landscape.
