Understanding OpenAI’s Research Cautious Approach

OpenAI has declared that the powerful AI model behind their deep research tool won’t be accessible through the developer API for the time being. The reason? They are reassessing how to effectively evaluate the risks associated with AI potentially persuading people to act on or modify their beliefs.

In a recently published whitepaper, OpenAI explained that they are revising their methods for evaluating “real-world persuasion risks,” which involves tackling the issue of spreading misleading information at scale. Although the deep research model boasts strong capabilities, OpenAI is cautious about its suitability for widespread misinformation campaigns due to high computational demands and slower processing times.

Despite these challenges, OpenAI has expressed its intention to further study aspects like personalizing persuasive content that could potentially have harmful effects before finally integrating the research model into its API. For now, the model will only remain operational within ChatGPT.

The spread of false information remains a significant concern. For example, political deepfakes surged globally last year, including incidents where misleading AI-generated audio of politicians went viral. Similar instances of AI being exploited in social engineering scams have also arisen, leading to substantial financial losses.

OpenAI’s whitepaper also shared the results of several tests on the persuasiveness of the deep research model. While the model performed impressively in certain persuasive tasks, there is still room for improvement compared to humans.

Interestingly, OpenAI’s competitors are already exploring similar products. A company named Perplexity has launched its own “Deep Research” feature, leveraging technology from another AI lab.
