TikTok has officially gone dark in the United States as the new ban-or-divest law takes effect. The app has vanished from both Apple and Google’s app stores, and users can’t even access it online. Talk about a social media blackout! With around 170 million users in the U.S. this is a significant shake-up in the digital landscape.
While other platforms have had their fair share of outages, none have experienced a total shutdown quite like TikTok. It’s like the lights went out at a party, and nobody knows when they’ll flicker back on! The Biden administration has passed enforcement responsibilities to the Trump administration, calling TikTok’s threat to shut down just a “stunt.” But TikTok insists it had no choice but to pull the plug without clearer assurances.
In an internal memo, TikTok informed its employees that President Trump is willing to collaborate on a solution to bring the app back once he takes office. So, fingers crossed for a swift resolution! A warning message popped up for users around 9 PM ET, announcing that a U.S. law banning TikTok would take effect on January 19th, making their services temporarily unavailable.
By 10:30 PM ET, users were greeted with messages indicating that TikTok was “not available right now.” The platform reassured everyone that President Trump is on board to help find a solution. Meanwhile, other apps under TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, like CapCut and Lemon8, have also been swept off the digital shelves.
This ban-or-divest law means TikTok is effectively banned unless ByteDance sells most of its stake. However, ByteDance doesn’t seem keen on selling as deadlines loom. In fact, TikTok even took legal action against the U.S. but ended up losing in a recent Supreme Court case.
Now it seems TikTok’s game plan involves cozying up to Trump, who previously advocated for the ban but is now looking for ways to keep the app alive. He even suggested extending ByteDance’s deadline by 90 days—talk about a political hot potato!
