Apple is making headlines by announcing its decision to remove TikTok and other ByteDance apps from its App Store in the U.S. This move comes as part of compliance with new laws aimed at regulating foreign applications. TikTok, along with CapCut and Marvel Snap, will be saying goodbye to the App Store starting January 19, 2025.
Before this ban kicked in, the Biden administration hinted that enforcement of the law would be handed over to the next administration. However, that didn’t slow down the process, especially after TikTok’s attempt to appeal to the Supreme Court fell flat.
According to Apple’s support page, they’re just doing what they have to do. They stated that they must adhere to local laws where they operate. This includes the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which specifically targets apps developed by ByteDance and its subsidiaries.
For those who already have these apps installed, fear not! You won’t lose them just yet. However, downloading or restoring them on new devices will be off the table for now. In-app purchases? Also a no-go. You can cancel subscriptions if you want, but that’s about it.
And for our friends visiting the U.S. from other countries? Sorry folks! You won’t be able to download or update any of these apps while you’re in the land of liberty.
Apple also shared a list of some affected apps linked to ByteDance, including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and even Marvel Snap. It’s quite the lineup!
As we approach the swearing-in of the new administration, TikTok has been vocal about wanting more clarity on potential legal repercussions for companies like Apple and Google if they choose to ignore this law.
