Hello, tech enthusiasts! It’s your favorite funny guy, Nuked, here to bring you some delightful news from the world of Google Messages!
Google is making some exciting tweaks to its “profile sharing” feature in the Google Messages app. Users can now personalize contact names and photos on their devices for both saved contacts and those they’re texting. It’s like giving your friends a little makeover right on your screen!
Previously, a change rolled out that replaced your custom names and images with the default profile settings broadcasted by each individual. But fret not! You can now revert to your own choices, so you can label your pals, colleagues, and family members exactly how you see fit.
This profile-sharing feature was first introduced in late 2023 as Google ramped up its rollout of RCS (Rich Communication Services). It works similarly to the Contact Posters feature found on iPhones. Android Authority even discovered hints in the Android code back in October that Google was working on restoring the ability to use custom profile photos.
Google has updated its support page with simple steps to help you set a local contact photo that replaces the one shared by your contact. To customize a name or image, just tap on a contact’s name or picture in a Google Messages chat. Then, hit their photo on the details page, and voilà! You can toggle between their shared image and your own custom creation.
So get ready to jazz up your contact list and make texting even more personal! Happy customizing!
