First up, we have a fantastic anime adaptation of Lord of the Rings hitting US theaters on December 13th. Following that, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 zooms into theaters on the 20th. Starting with Star Trek: Section 31! The real star of this straight-to-streaming spy movie spinoff from Star Trek: Discovery is none other than Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou. She’s clearly having a blast in the trailer! While the specifics of the threat remain under wraps, it looks like we’re in for some classic rag-tag antihero action. This film, directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, also features Omari Hardwick and Kacey Rohl. Catch it on Paramount Plus starting January 24th!
Next, let’s talk about Severance. I joined the Severance fan club a bit late but finally caught up a few months ago. Now I can only imagine how those who experienced its cliffhanger must feel! The second season of this mind-bending sci-fi drama by Dan Erickson is just around the corner. It promises to unravel some mysteries while piling on new ones! The main cast returns, including Mark (Adam Scott) and Irving (John Turturro), and they’re joined by talents like Alia Shawkat and Gwendoline Christie. Then we have Invincible! The third season will showcase a more powerful Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun) confronting GDA director Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins). The series kicks off with three episodes on February 6th on Amazon Prime, with more dropping every Thursday until March 13th.
The Wheel of Time is also making waves as it continues its epic tale based on Robert Jordan’s fantasy series. In its upcoming third season, we’ll follow Rand al’Thor (Joshua Stradowski) and Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) into the Aiel Waste—a dark chapter indeed! Now onto The Gorge! This intriguing film keeps an air of mystery as two snipers—Levi (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy)—are stationed at opposite sides, tasked with keeping whatever lurks in the gorge contained. Spoiler alert: they fall for each other and things get complicated! Directed by Scott Derrickson, this flick also stars Sigourney Weaver and premieres on February 14th on Apple TV Plus.
Last but certainly not least is Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX! Giant robot anime aficionados can rejoice because there’s a new installment coming in 2024. Produced by Khara, known for the Rebuild of Evangelion films, this show follows high schooler Yuzuriha “Machu” Amate (Tomoyo Kurosawa) as she learns to co-pilot a massive sword-wielding robot alongside Shuji Ito (Shimba Tsuchiya). Some episodes are hitting Japanese theaters starting January 17th!
