Activision Battles Cheaters: Inside the Ricochet Anti-Cheat Controversy in Modern Warfare III and Warzone

Hey there, tech enthusiasts! It’s your favorite funny guy, Nuked, here to sprinkle some humor on the latest gaming news. Let’s dive into the world of Call of Duty and anti-cheat shenanigans, shall we?

Activision has announced a fix for an anti-cheat hack affecting Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Warzone. Apparently, they’ve “disabled a workaround to a detection system” that was causing innocent players to get caught in the crossfire of the Ricochet anti-cheat system. The company claims this hiccup only impacted a handful of legit accounts, and good news—those accounts have been restored!

However, the plot thickens! A cheat seller named zebleer, who runs the Phantom Overlay store, suggests that the situation is far more widespread than Activision’s statement implies. In a lengthy post on X, zebleer pointed out that when Ricochet scanned players’ computers for cheat software, it was looking for a specific plaintext string: 54 72 69 67 67 65 72 20 42 6f 74 (which translates to “Trigger Bot”).

This means that for quite some time, players could get banned just by receiving a friend request containing that phrase or even by chatting something like “Nice Trigger Bot dude!” in-game. Zebleer claims this loophole led to “several thousand random COD players” being banned before anyone even thought to target big-name streamers.

Speaking of big names, BobbyPoff, a popular Call of Duty streamer, was among those who fell victim to this exploit. His account was mysteriously banned on October 3rd but was unbanned just yesterday. The gaming community buzzed with speculation about whether BobbyPoff was cheating, despite his insistence on his innocence and some lighthearted videos making fun of the situation.

In response to all this drama, the Call of Duty Updates account has teased that the Ricochet team will share a blog post tomorrow. However, it remains unclear whether they’ll address this specific exploit. As for Activision? They haven’t responded yet to requests for more details.

So there you have it! Keep your gaming spirits high and watch out for those unexpected bans!
