Rockstar’s GTA V Takes a Detour: Steam Deck Compatibility Hits a Roadblock!

Hello, my tech-savvy friends! It’s Nuked here, bringing you the latest scoop on the gaming world.

So, it seems like Grand Theft Auto V, a fan favorite on the Steam Deck, has hit a bit of a snag. Just this week, it was listed as “unsupported” by Valve. This title has been in the top twenty games for the past two years, so what gives?

The issue stems from developer Rockstar breaking compatibility with the Steam Deck for its online modes. It’s like they decided to throw a wrench into the works just when everyone was enjoying their gaming sessions!

As shown in the image above, this is another episode in the ongoing saga of Linux anti-cheat measures. Similar to how Fortnite and Roblox approached things, Rockstar has opted not to support the Steam Deck with its new anti-cheat software for GTA Online. And let’s be real, this game certainly needed some better measures against cheaters.

However, unlike Fortnite and Roblox, which simply didn’t bring their multiplayer modes to the Steam Deck, Rockstar is taking away access that players already had. They’re putting the blame on Valve, stating that “Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online” and advising everyone to direct their questions to Valve instead.

But here’s where it gets tricky: Rockstar hasn’t clarified why they didn’t enable BattlEye for the Steam Deck. Last I checked, it works just fine! Valve has had BattlEye enabled for the Steam Deck for years now, and numerous games have made that leap without any issues.

Valve claims that getting a game like GTA V running with BattlEye is as simple as sending an email. Yet, Rockstar hasn’t responded to inquiries about this matter. I even reached out to Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais for updates on anti-cheat developments but haven’t heard back yet.

Interestingly enough, there’s chatter about how allowing Linux users to tinker with anti-cheat could lead to vulnerabilities. But Epic’s Tim Sweeney hinted last year that economics might also play a role in this decision-making process.

On a brighter note, if you’re a fan of single-player action, you’re in luck! According to Rockstar’s FAQ, you can still dive into GTAV Story Mode. Just keep in mind that GTA Online will be off-limits for now.

So there you have it! A little hiccup in the gaming world that has left many players scratching their heads. Keep your controllers ready; who knows what twists and turns await us next!
