Apple is making some significant changes to how it manages the App Store. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, the company is splitting its App Store division into two distinct groups. One team will focus on running the App Store, while the other will handle the growing number of alternative marketplaces emerging in the European Union.

As part of this shake-up, Matt Fischer, who has been vice president of the App Store for over a decade, will be stepping down. In an email to employees that Bloomberg got a hold of, Fischer expressed that this transition has been on his mind for a while. He believes now is the perfect moment to pass the torch to two capable leaders within his team.

Carson Oliver, a senior director at Apple, is set to take charge of the App Store division. Meanwhile, Ann Thai, a product director, will lead the team focusing on alternative distribution methods. Phil Schiller, the current chief of the App Store, will oversee both divisions during this transition period. The Verge reached out to Apple for comments but hasn’t received a response yet.

This restructuring comes in light of new regulations in Europe that require Apple to allow third-party payment options and alternative app stores. Recently, Fortnite made a comeback on iPhone thanks to the launch of the Epic Games Store on iOS. Other alternative app stores like AltStore PAL, Mobivention, and Aptoid are also popping up in that region.
