Recently, some leaked images from @MysteryLupin on X have given us a sneak peek at what seems to be the fourth generation of the Nest Learning Thermostat. Along with that, we spotted new temperature sensors and several other thermostat models like the Nest E and the third-gen Nest Learning Thermostat. Interestingly, the 2020 Nest Thermostat is missing from these snapshots—probably because it doesn’t play nice with Nest’s room sensors.

This new thermostat bears a resemblance to its predecessor but sports a more curved display while keeping the beloved physical dial. It’s likely that this version will feature a touchscreen, just like the third-gen model. One eye-catching detail is a new icon featuring three wavy lines, hinting that this gadget could double as an indoor air quality monitor—a first for Nest thermostats!

In support of this theory, a leaked screenshot from the Google Home app showcases a Climate screen displaying an air quality index score. If true, this would mark the first new Nest Learning Thermostat since 2015! Since the discontinued Nest E is in the mix, it seems that this model might make its way to Europe, unlike the 2020 version.

The thermostat reportedly works with a redesigned second-gen Nest Temperature Sensor. This newer sensor can still be wall-mounted or placed on tables but has a rounder, squishier design and lacks distinct Nest branding for now. Pricing is set at $39 each or three for $99, with a battery life of three years—just like current models that help balance your home’s heating and cooling.

However, as I mentioned in our review, these sensors have some limitations compared to competitors like Ecobee since they don’t detect presence. Fingers crossed that these new versions will bring some exciting features to the table!

Speaking of features, these temperature sensors appear quite rounded and almost marshmallow-like. The new Climate screen in the Google Home app also showcases air quality data based on those leaked images. Furthermore, 9to5Google has discovered FCC filings suggesting that this thermostat may incorporate Google’s Soli radar technology. This would allow the display to light up when you approach it and enhance presence detection for Google’s Home & Away Routines.

While Soli technology is present in the 2020 Nest Thermostat, it wasn’t included in the third-gen model from 2015. Surprisingly, the FCC filings didn’t mention a Thread radio in this new thermostat—something that might raise eyebrows since Thread was initially developed for the original Nest thermostat.

It’s been quite some time since Google rolled out a fresh Learning Thermostat—one that adapts to your heating and cooling habits rather than sticking strictly to a schedule like its cheaper counterpart does. Currently, you can snag the existing Nest Learning Thermostat for $169 (down from $249), but it doesn’t support Matter—the smart home standard that Google is closely involved with—while its budget-friendly sibling does.
