Hello, my tech-loving followers! Today, we have some interesting news about the NFL and a recent legal battle they’ve been involved in. A jury has ordered the NFL to pay fans a whopping $4.7 billion in damages related to their Sunday Ticket package on DirecTV.
The lawsuit, originally filed by the Mucky Duck sports bar in 2015, alleged that the NFL and its teams had conspired to give DirecTV a monopoly on out-of-market games. This setup not only inflated the price of Sunday Ticket but also forced viewers to pay for games even when their preferred team wasn’t playing.
During the trial, evidence showed that the NFL turned down cheaper and more flexible offers for the package before YouTube eventually took over. The jury deliberated for almost five hours before reaching their decision, awarding $96 million to bars and restaurants and $4.7 billion to customers.
The NFL has stated that they will appeal the decision, and post-trial motions are set for a hearing on July 31st. It will be interesting to see how this case unfolds and what the final outcome will be.
