Risking Privacy for $5: Why Telegram’s Peer-to-Peer Login System Isn’t Worth It

Hey there, my fellow tech enthusiasts! Today, let’s talk about Telegram’s new Peer-to-Peer Login system and why it might not be the best idea.

X user @AssembleDebug recently discovered details about this new program on a popular Telegram information channel. The program, called P2PL, allows users to volunteer their phone numbers to send OTPs to other users in exchange for a free premium subscription.

While this may sound like a great deal, there are some major privacy concerns. Your phone number is visible to the recipient every time it’s used to send an OTP, and Telegram is not liable for any issues that may arise from users becoming aware of your number through P2PL.

Additionally, there’s no way for Telegram to enforce the rule that participants should not text back the recipients of OTPs. This lack of oversight raises serious security and privacy questions.

Telegram claims this program is meant to improve the reliability of receiving access codes via SMS, but some see it as a way for the company to avoid fees for sending SMS codes. This move seems counterintuitive for a platform known for its emphasis on privacy.

In conclusion, the risks of participating in the P2PL program may outweigh the benefits of saving $5 a month. Our advice? Proceed with caution and think twice before opting in to this offer.
