Hello my fellow tech enthusiasts! Today, I bring you some interesting news about Mozilla and its recent decision to part ways with its privacy partner, Onerep. As reported by Krebs on Security, the reason behind this split is due to Onerep’s CEO having ties to a data broker.
Back in February, Mozilla had integrated Onerep’s data removal service into its Monitor Plus subscription, allowing users to easily locate and request the removal of their personal information online. However, further investigation revealed that Onerep’s CEO, Dimitri Shelest, had been involved in the creation of multiple people-search websites over the years.
In response to these findings, Shelest admitted to still holding a stake in Nuwber, a people search platform. Despite claiming that there is no sharing of information between Nuwber and Onerep, Mozilla decided to end their partnership with Onerep due to conflicting values.
Looking ahead, Mozilla is currently working on a transition plan to ensure a seamless experience for its customers. It remains uncertain whether Mozilla will seek out a new partner or discontinue the service altogether.
It’s important for companies like Mozilla to uphold their values and prioritize user privacy, even if it means making tough decisions like ending partnerships. As technology continues to evolve, maintaining trust and transparency with users is key.
