During the FediForum conference, Meta’s Peter Cottle showcased a brief demo of how users can connect their accounts and posts to the fediverse through Threads. This integration will enable users to share their content across different platforms, expanding their reach and connecting with multiple audiences simultaneously.

Meta is just one of the many platforms looking to join the fediverse, a collection of decentralized social networks striving for interoperability. The video shared by FediForum shows Cottle navigating to his Threads account settings and activating the “fediverse sharing” option, along with some important disclaimers provided by Meta to users.

One key point highlighted by Meta is the need for users to have a public profile to enable this feature, as mentioned previously by Instagram head Adam Mosseri. Additionally, users in the alpha test phase can currently only see likes on their posts and not replies, but Meta is actively working on improving this.

Meta also cautions users that deleting a post on Threads may not guarantee its removal from other linked platforms in the fediverse. Despite this limitation, once fediverse sharing is enabled, users can post to other services that support ActivityPub interoperability.

Cottle demonstrated how Threads can be used to post to the fediverse, showcasing how his post federated out to Mastodon. He also emphasized Meta’s good intentions in entering the fediverse community and its commitment to being a positive member of this ecosystem.
