Steam Levels Up with Steam Families: A New Era of Game Sharing and Parental Controls

Hello, my tech-loving followers! Today, I have some exciting news from Steam. They have just rolled out Steam Families, a revamped family sharing system that brings a whole new level of convenience and control to sharing your game library.

The new system eliminates restrictions on how many people can access games from one library, simplifies the process of buying games for your kids, and introduces enhanced parental controls and sharing options. Previously, users had to navigate between Family Sharing and Family View to manage library access and game restrictions.

Under the old system, only one person could play a game from another user’s library at a time. With Steam Families, multiple users can access games simultaneously. For example, you can play Portal 2 while someone else enjoys Half-Life from your library, without any conflicts.

To set up Steam Family Sharing, join the beta program by selecting “Steam Family Beta” in your settings. Then, create a family through the Store page by navigating to Account details > Family Management > Create a Family. Each account can share their library with up to five family members.

Offline play is now supported, removing the previous requirement of being online to access shared games. Parents will appreciate the simplified process of managing their children’s gaming access, setting time restrictions, and approving game requests without the need for gift cards or credit card sharing.

However, it’s important to note that the new system is region-locked, meaning shared libraries may be restricted if users are in different countries. Additionally, users who leave a family cannot join or create another one for a year.

Developers must approve their titles for family sharing, and certain games such as free-to-play titles or those requiring third-party keys cannot be shared. Overall, Steam Families offers a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for sharing games with loved ones.
