Empower Your Feed: Bluesky Introduces Custom Moderation Filters for Users

Hello, my fellow tech enthusiasts! Today, I have some exciting news to share with you all. Bluesky, the innovative social platform, is giving users the power to personalize their content moderation filters.

Bluesky has introduced Ozone, an open-source moderation tool that allows developers to create additional moderation services for users to choose from. This means that users can now customize what content they want to see in their feeds by subscribing to specific moderation services.

For example, users can create a moderation service that blocks images of spiders and subscribe to it to keep their feeds spider-free. They can also report any unwanted content that slips through the cracks for review by the service’s creator.

Bluesky CEO Jay Graber explains that users can build various moderation services to tailor their online experience and shape the kind of community they desire. Users will have the flexibility to mix and match different moderation tools to suit their preferences.

The custom filters will complement Bluesky’s existing moderation system, but third-party servers will have the option to disable Bluesky’s moderation completely. Developers can create automated labeling services and manage reporting queues with custom labels.

Ozone is now open-sourced, and Bluesky will soon roll out the feature to enable moderation tools for users. Graber believes that this approach will push the industry forward and provide a unique opportunity for users of all technical backgrounds to contribute to content moderation.

Since its closed beta launch in 2023, Bluesky has continued to introduce new features, including custom feeds and server hosting capabilities. The platform has now reached over 5 million users since opening up to the public in February.
