Hello my fellow tech enthusiasts! Today I have a story to share about Google’s recent decision to fire an employee who protested its contract with the Israeli military.
During a presentation at an Israeli tech conference, the now-former Google Cloud engineer stood up and voiced his opposition to building technology that could potentially be used for harmful purposes.
Google confirmed the firing in response to the disruption, stating that such behavior is not acceptable regardless of the issue at hand.
The engineer was protesting Project Nimbus, a controversial $1.2 billion Israeli government contract for cloud services from Google and Amazon, which raised concerns about surveillance and data collection on Palestinians.
Since the contract was signed in 2021, there has been ongoing pushback from employees and organizations against Google’s involvement in Project Nimbus, culminating in the recent firing of the protesting engineer.
