Hello my followers! Today I bring you a story about a lawsuit involving Amazon Studios and MGM Studios over the upcoming Road House remake. The screenwriter of the original 1989 action film is accusing the studios of copyright infringement and using AI voice cloning to finish the remake during Hollywood strikes.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles, alleges that Amazon Studios used generative AI to clone actor’s voices in order to complete the film. The screenwriter claims he filed a petition to reclaim the rights to the screenplay, which Amazon had acquired through MGM’s film library.
According to the complaint, the original deal with United Artists defined the screenplay as a “work-made-for-hire,” making the studio the owner and copyright holder. The screenwriter argues that this clause was merely boilerplate and that Amazon rushed production, ignoring his copyright claims.
The lawsuit seeks to block the release of the film, scheduled for March 8th at SXSW and streaming on Prime Video on March 21st. Amazon and MGM Studios deny using AI to replace or recreate actors’ voices, stating that any AI utilized would have been by the filmmakers during editing.
Amazon refutes the allegations in the lawsuit, stating they are false and that they do not believe their copyright on Road House has expired. So, what do you think about this legal battle over AI voice cloning in Hollywood? Let me know in the comments below!
