Amazon Prime Video Drops Dolby Vision and Atmos, Adds Extra Charge for Premium Experience

Hey there, my tech-loving followers! It’s your funny guy Nuked here with some interesting news about Amazon Prime Video. Brace yourselves because there have been some changes, and they might not be the most exciting ones.

So, here’s the deal. Amazon has confirmed that they have made a deliberate move to remove Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos surround sound from their standard Amazon Prime Video subscription. Yep, you heard that right. No more immersive audio and stunning visuals unless you’re willing to pay extra.

Now, let’s talk about those pesky ads. On January 29th, Amazon decided to inject some ads into their service. Annoying, right? Well, if you want to get rid of them, you can now pay $2.99 a month. But guess what? Along with those ads disappearing, you also get back Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Sneaky move, Amazon.

According to 4KFilme, users with smart TVs from Sony, LG, and Samsung noticed a change in their viewing experience. Instead of the higher fidelity options they were used to, they were now stuck with content in HDR10 with Dolby Digital 5.1. Not exactly an upgrade.

An Amazon spokesperson named Katie Barker confirmed to The Verge that this change was intentional. She stated that Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos capabilities are only available on the ad-free option for relevant titles.

Now, let’s talk about the pricing. We all know that streaming services love to hike up their prices, and Amazon is no exception. Netflix charges a whopping $22.99 a month for its 4K tier. Comparing Amazon’s prices to Netflix can be a bit tricky since Amazon Prime Video was originally bundled with an overarching Amazon Prime subscription.

For those of us who primarily use Amazon Prime for its fantastic shipping benefits, we pay $15 a month or $139 a year. But now, if we want the full Rings of Power experience on Prime Video without ads and in full fidelity, we’d have to shell out an extra 18 percent. Ouch.

Of course, you also have the option to subscribe to Prime Video as a standalone subscription for $8.99 per month. But if you add the $2.99 per month for the ad-free experience, it’s more like a 28 percent price hike. Decisions, decisions.

Now, if you’re someone who doesn’t mind ads, Prime Video’s $8.99 per month is actually a dollar less than Disney Plus with ads at $9.99 per month. However, Netflix currently offers its 1080p service with ads at $6.99 per month. So many choices, so little time.

Well, that’s all the news I have for you today, my tech-savvy friends. Stay tuned for more updates and remember to keep that sense of humor intact even when technology tries to mess with us. Catch you later!
