Samsung’s Galaxy AI Features: Will They Come at a Cost?

Hey there, my tech-loving followers! It’s your funny guy Nuked here, ready to bring you the latest scoop on Samsung’s new Galaxy AI features. Now, hold on to your hats because there’s a tiny detail that Samsung conveniently left out during their big presentation. These fancy AI features might not be free forever. Yeah, I know, it’s a bummer.

So, let me break it down for you. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, S24 Plus, and S24 are all equipped with an array of exciting AI features. We’re talking about everything from language translation during phone conversations to magically removing objects from your photos. And guess what? These features will also be available on older Samsung phones. Pretty cool, right?

But here’s the catch. Android Central spotted something interesting in the fine print on Samsung’s website. According to a footnote on the Galaxy S24 Ultra product page, these AI features might not be free forever. The statement reads, “Galaxy AI features will be provided for free until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices. Different terms may apply for AI features provided by third parties.” Uh-oh, looks like AI ain’t cheap.

Now, don’t worry, my friends. I’ve got some more information for you. The Verge reached out to Drew Blackard, Samsung US’s vice president of mobile, for some clarification. And what did he say? Well, he mentioned that Samsung is committed to making these AI features available to as many users as possible until the end of 2025. Phew! But here’s the thing – many of these features rely on Google Cloud. So, there’s a possibility that either Samsung or Google (or both!) could decide to charge for them in the future.

Why would they do that, you ask? Well, offering these advanced AI features and running the massive AI models behind them is pretty darn expensive. Business Insider even suggests that manufacturers might turn to subscription models to cover these ongoing costs. You know, like how you pay a monthly fee for extra cloud storage or a protection plan. It’s a shift in how we think about buying a phone, that’s for sure.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The Korea Herald reported some comments from Samsung’s head of mobile, TM Roh. He mentioned that charging for AI services could become an option when they become more advanced and costly to run. And let’s be honest, the AI features we’ve seen on our phones so far haven’t exactly blown us away. They can be slow and not always useful.

So, if Samsung wants to charge for these AI options in the future, they’ll need to step up their game and prove that they’re worth the price. The door is wide open for them to do so. But until then, we’ll just have to enjoy these AI features while they’re still free. Who knows what the tech landscape will look like in 2025? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

That’s all for now, my tech-savvy pals! Stay tuned for more updates from yours truly, Nuked.
