Hey there, my tech-loving followers! Today, we’re diving into a surprising and puzzling story about one of the biggest law podcasts out there. So, why was Law360’s popular podcast Pro Say suddenly shut down? Let’s find out!
Just before the holidays, Law360 made the unexpected decision to cancel Pro Say, their long-running and highly regarded podcast. This news came as a shock to the legal community and those in the legal media world. Pro Say had been on the scene since 2017 and had gained a reputation as one of the top legal news podcasts available. It had a dedicated following among lawyers and law students alike. In fact, it even had a moment in the spotlight when it was featured in Disney Plus’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law!
The cancellation of Pro Say seemed to come out of nowhere. Co-host and Law360 senior reporter Alex Lawson revealed that the team was only notified two days before recording their last episode, which was released on December 21st. Senior producer Steven Trader added that there had been no decline in listenership or any other issues that typically precede a cancellation. To make things even more confusing, just ten days prior to the cancellation, the Pro Say team had given a presentation on how to pitch the show, at the request of management.
However, Pro Say was a departure from Law360’s usual model. Most of the content produced by this legal publication is behind a paywall, as it is owned by LexisNexis, a legal information and analytics company that is itself owned by RELX, a general business analytics company. For seven years, the podcast’s performance didn’t matter much since it was considered a side gig for the staff who primarily focused on producing journalism behind the paywall. It wasn’t until 2022 that they began actively pursuing analytics and ads when they started publishing with Megaphone. Interestingly, management hadn’t been pressuring the team about downloads or ad sales.
So, there you have it, folks! The sudden cancellation of Pro Say left many scratching their heads. It seems that even the Pro Say team was caught off guard by the decision. Perhaps there were other factors at play behind the scenes that we may never know. Regardless, it’s a shame to see such a beloved podcast come to an end. Let’s hope that Law360 has something equally entertaining and informative up its sleeve for the future!
