So, the first reported accident involving a Tesla Cybertruck has just hit the headlines. But don’t worry, it seems like everyone involved only suffered minor injuries. Phew!
According to a Reddit user named boddhya, who posted two pictures of the accident, the California Highway Patrol confirmed that they responded to a collision between a 2023 Tesla Cybertruck and a 2009 Toyota Corolla on SR 35 (Skyline Boulevard). The incident took place in Palo Alto around 2:05 PM local time. The Cybertruck was carrying three people and appears to have been hit by the Corolla driven by a 17-year-old.
Now, we all know that there have been some concerns about the Cybertruck’s design and how it would hold up in an accident. But luckily, it seems like those worries may be unfounded in this case. The CHP reported that their preliminary investigation indicates that the Corolla driver turned to the right for unknown reasons, crashed into a dirt embankment, and then re-entered the roadway. The Corolla then collided with the Cybertruck head-on in the opposite lane.
Thankfully, the only injury mentioned in the CHP release is a suspected minor injury to the Cybertruck driver. And get this, they even declined medical transportation! It’s also worth noting that the CHP stated that it does not appear that the Tesla was operating in autonomous mode at the time of the accident. So no need to worry about robots taking over just yet.
Now, let’s talk about the damage. The pictures posted on Reddit show that the Corolla’s front end took quite a beating. On the other hand, the Cybertruck seems to have fared surprisingly well, despite the side-curtain airbags being deployed. However, we can only see the passenger side of the Cybertruck in the pictures, so we can’t say for sure how it looks on the other side. And hey, guess what? There were no markings of a “release candidate” on the truck, but we couldn’t spot any “Foundation Series” etching either. So, it’s a bit unclear if this was a customer-delivered model or something else.
