Blue Origin, the space tourism company, is gearing up for a New Shepard launch on Monday at 9:30AM ET. This will be their first attempt since the rocket booster failed during its September 2022 launch. But hey, they say it’s all about getting back on the horse, right?
The launch will take place at Blue Origin’s Launch Site One in West Texas. And here’s the best part – they’re going to livestream it on their website! You can join in on the excitement 20 minutes before the countdown begins.
This particular launch will be the 24th one for Blue Origin’s reusable New Shepard rocket. And guess what? It’s not just carrying any old payload – it’s loaded up with 33 science experiments. Talk about a rocket with a purpose!
Now, most of Blue Origin’s launches have been uncrewed, but they’ve had their fair share of human passengers too. In fact, they even took William Shatner, yes Captain Kirk himself, on one of their previous missions. Talk about boldly going where no man has gone before!
But let’s not forget about their past mishap. Last year, Blue Origin faced a setback with their uncrewed NS-23 launch. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stepped in to investigate what went wrong. According to the FAA’s report, the failure was caused by an engine nozzle that couldn’t handle the high temperatures. Luckily, all the debris was contained in the designated hazard area.
Since then, Blue Origin has been working hard to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself. The FAA gave them 21 corrective actions, including redesigning engine and nozzle components, as well as making organizational changes. Safety first, folks!
But wait, there’s more! Alongside the scientific experiments, the New Shepard rocket will also be carrying 38,000 postcards sent by students participating in Blue Origin’s Club for the Future program. These postcards promote STEM education and are a physical representation of the club’s mission. But that’s not all – there’s also a hard drive filled with digital submissions. Talk about taking education to new heights!
