Bending Spoons, the company behind the popular iOS and Android mobile filmmaking app Filmic Pro, has made some major changes recently. According to PetaPixel, they have reportedly laid off all of the staff behind Filmic Pro, including the founder and CEO, Neill Barham. Yep, you heard that right – no more dedicated employees for Filmic Pro.

Some former high-level employees have already shared their departure from the company. Christopher Cohen, who served as Filmic’s technical chief officer, took to social media on November 3rd to announce that he was no longer with the company. Kevin Buonagurio, the former chief operating officer, also confirmed the layoffs in a response to a LinkedIn user.

Filmic Pro has been quite popular among mobile filmmakers over the years. It has been used to shoot movies and music videos, and Apple even featured its Filmic DoubleTake dual-camera recording app prominently when they revamped their camera approach for the iPhone 11 Pro phones. The app had even announced its annual competitive mobile filmmaking festival, FilmicFest 2023, with a grand prize of $25,000. However, it seems like that event is no longer happening since the signup page no longer exists.

Shortly after Bending Spoons acquired Filmic last year, they introduced a subscription plan for the app. Users could now pay either $2.99 a week or $50 annually to access its features. While this may be considered affordable for a professional app, it did make it less accessible for independent filmmakers who preferred the previous one-time payment system.

It’s worth noting that Bending Spoons has made similar changes for another company they acquired last year, Evernote. After buying Evernote, they laid off most of its original staff over the summer. So, it seems like this is a pattern for them.

With no staff remaining, Filmic Pro will most likely be brought in-house at Bending Spoons. The company is already involved in mobile video with its Splice video editing app, which they took over from GoPro in 2018. We can only speculate if they will keep the Filmic Pro app around, but it’s safe to say that it won’t be the same app that gained such a great reputation in the first place.
