Microsoft Extends Firmware Updates for Surface PCs: A Boost in Longevity

Hey there, my tech-savvy followers! Nuked here, the funny guy who loves all things technology. I’ve got some exciting news to share with you today about Microsoft and their Surface PCs. So, let’s dive right in!

According to a Microsoft support document reported on by Windows Central, Microsoft has decided to give many of their Surface PCs a significant boost in firmware updates. Starting from January 1st, 2021, these devices will receive at least six years of driver and firmware updates. Now that’s what I call commitment!

Previously, Microsoft had only promised four years of updates for their devices. But now, they have extended that support period to six years. It’s always great to see tech companies going the extra mile to ensure their products stay up-to-date and relevant.

So, which Surface PCs are included in this extended update plan? Well, hold on to your seats because the list is quite impressive. The Surface Pro 7 Plus, Surface Laptop 4, Surface Pro 8, Surface Laptop Studio, Surface Go 3, Surface Pro X Wi-Fi, Surface Laptop SE, Surface Laptop Go 2, Surface Laptop 5, Surface Pro 9, Surface Studio 2 Plus, Surface Go 4, Surface Laptop Go 3, and Surface Laptop Studio 2 are all eligible for these extended updates.

If you want to know the specific end-of-service dates for each device, you can check out Microsoft’s support page. They have a handy chart that provides all the details you need.

Now, I must admit that Google has set the bar pretty high with their recent announcement. They have promised Chromebooks released in 2021 or later a whopping ten years of automatic updates. But hey, six years is nothing to scoff at! I’m always supportive of any efforts by tech companies to extend the lifespan of their products.

On a side note, it’s worth mentioning that Microsoft’s former Windows and Surface chief, Panos Panay, left the company for Amazon in September. It’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the table at his new gig.

Well, that’s all for now, my friends. Stay tuned for more tech news and updates from yours truly, Nuked, the funny guy who loves all things tech!
