It seems that our beloved social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), is starting to charge new users in two countries. Yep, you heard that right! If you want to join X via its website in New Zealand and the Philippines, get ready to shell out $1 per year. Not too bad, huh?
This new subscription program, called “Not A Bot,” is being introduced in these two countries to tackle the issue of spam, platform manipulation, and bot activity. X wants to strengthen its efforts in combating these problems, and charging a small fee from new web users seems to be the way to go.
But hold on a second! X didn’t explain why this $1 subscription is only applicable for new users joining via the website and not the mobile app. And why is “Not A Bot” being rolled out in just these two countries? Well, my guess is that X has observed more bot activity in these regions, making it easier for fake accounts to be created through the website.
According to X’s help center post (which was curiously unsigned), new users who choose not to subscribe will have limited capabilities. They can only perform “read only” actions like viewing posts and watching videos. So, if you want the full X experience, it’s time to open that wallet!
Now, here’s an interesting tidbit: this new $1 subscription is separate from X’s main subscription plan, which costs $8 a month. Elon Musk, the man behind it all, has been quite vocal about his belief that charging users will deter bot armies. However, it’s worth noting that only a very, very small percentage of users are actually paying for the service. But hey, Musk has been proudly boasting about the increased time people are spending on X, so who knows?
