Now, I know it’s been a while since we last talked about this case, what with all the other tech dramas happening lately. But guess what? The trial is just around the corner, starting on November 6th in California’s Northern District. So, let’s dive into the juicy details!
Recently, the court released a tentative list of witnesses who will be testifying during the trial. And boy, it’s a star-studded lineup! Epic has a whopping 53 witnesses on their list, including some big names from both Google and Alphabet. We’re talking about none other than Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, and Ruth Porat, the CFO of both companies. And let’s not forget about Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic, who will also be taking the stand.
But wait, there’s more! We have Andy Rubin on the list too. Now, for those of you who don’t know, Andy Rubin is one of the co-founders of the Android operating system and Essential. He used to work at Google until 2014 when he left amidst allegations of sexual misconduct. Though he’s listed as a “may call” witness, there’s a chance he might not testify.
Now, let’s talk about some other interesting witnesses. Epic has also listed two other co-founders of Android – Nick Sears and Rich Miner. Sears left Google in 2013 but is now on Epic’s witness list. Miner, on the other hand, is still working at Google and could be called by them. Additionally, Epic has included Activision CFO Armin Zerza and former Open Handset Alliance head Eric Chu on their list.
So, why is Epic suing Google, you ask? Well, it all comes down to the Google Play store practices. Epic alleges that after they left the Google Play store, Google launched a campaign to prevent other developers from following suit. They even went as far as allegedly paying millions of dollars to some developers in what Epic claims is an anticompetitive move.
