Apple’s Search Revolution: Upgrading the App Store and Beyond

Hey there, my tech-savvy followers! I’ve got some exciting news to share with you today. It seems that Apple is planning to give a major upgrade to its App Store’s search engine, and who knows, they might not stop there!

According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, Apple is working on bringing its powerful internal search engine, codenamed “Pegasus,” to the App Store and other apps. This comes after Apple introduced some fantastic upgrades to its Spotlight search feature in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. Users can now search for web results, app details, documents, and much more right from Spotlight.

Gurman mentions that John Giannandrea’s search team, consisting of former Google executives, is hard at work integrating the “Pegasus” search engine even more deeply into iOS and macOS. They might even use generative AI tools to make it even better. This move could potentially put Apple in a better position to compete with Google.

Speaking of competition, Apple also launched Business Connect last year. This tool aimed to strengthen Apple’s information database by providing detailed information about businesses’ hours and locations. This move was seen as a way for Apple to take on Google in the search game.

Now, let’s talk about the App Store ads business. While Apple’s Spotlight and app search engine may not be as powerful as Google’s, Apple has built a robust App Store ads business. These ads serve not only the App Store but also other apps like Apple News and Weather. With all these pieces in place, it appears that Apple has enough ammunition to potentially launch its own search engine sooner rather than later.

But hold your horses! Whether Apple will actually go ahead and create its own search engine is still up for debate. Eddy Cue, an Apple executive, has previously stated that Apple doesn’t need to develop its own search engine. In fact, there were even reports that Apple turned down an offer to buy Bing in 2020.

So, my friends, the question remains: will Apple take the plunge and venture into the world of search engines? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure, if Apple does decide to go down this path, it’s bound to be an interesting and game-changing move in the tech industry.
