Hey there, my tech-loving followers! I’ve got some interesting news for you today. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, it seems that Microsoft tried to convince Apple to buy Bing last year. Now, before you get too excited, let me tell you that the talks didn’t go very far. It appears that Apple’s top executives, including the well-known Eddy Cue, didn’t take the idea too seriously.
Now, you might be wondering why Microsoft even bothered with this pitch. Well, it seems they believe that Apple was just using the possibility of buying Bing as a way to negotiate more money from Google. In fact, Microsoft’s own Mikhail Parakhin mentioned in court that Apple is making more money from Bing’s existence than Bing itself!
But here’s the thing: Apple has never really considered replacing Google as the default search engine on iPhones. And the ongoing FTC antitrust suit against Google has made that abundantly clear. The deal between Apple and Google is quite lucrative, bringing in upwards of $20 billion annually for Apple. So, it’s no surprise that they have no intention of changing things up.
However, it’s worth noting that Apple did have some concerns about Bing’s ability to compete with Google in terms of quality and capabilities. And let’s be honest, Google has been the dominant player in the search engine market for quite some time now.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “Well, why doesn’t Apple just switch to another search engine?” It seems like a valid question, but as Eddy Cue himself testified, there simply wasn’t a viable alternative to Google at the time of the deal’s origin. And even now, after all these years, no equal competitor has emerged.
Interestingly enough, Bing did have its chances in the past. It was the default search engine for Siri and Spotlight searches for a few years, starting with iOS 7. Some believed that this could lead to a bigger shift, but Apple ultimately decided to stick with Google for Safari and the search results that customers have come to expect.
Back in 2016, there were even meetings between Tim Cook and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to discuss a potential new deal that could have brought about significant changes. However, nothing came of it. And as we now know, Apple and Google recently extended their deal in 2021, so Microsoft’s attempt to throw a wrench into those plans the year before didn’t succeed.
So, there you have it, folks. Microsoft’s pitch to Apple about buying Bing didn’t go anywhere. Apple remains firmly committed to Google as its default search engine, and it seems like that won’t be changing anytime soon. But hey, who knows what the future holds? Maybe someday we’ll see a true competitor emerge in the search engine market. Until then, let’s enjoy the convenience of our default search engines and keep on exploring the world of technology!
