Zoom CEO Urges FTC to Take Action Against Microsoft Teams’ Bundling Tactics

So, hot off the press, it seems that Zoom’s CEO, Eric Yuan, isn’t too thrilled about Microsoft bundling Teams into Office in Europe. And you know what? He’s suggesting that the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) should take a look at doing the same thing stateside. Talk about stirring up some competition!

According to Bloomberg, Yuan made this remark during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference. When asked about Microsoft unbundling Teams in Europe, he responded by saying, “You should ask this question to the FTC as well.” Well played, Yuan.

Now, let’s talk about bundling for a moment. Vox Media, where yours truly hangs out, has switched from Zoom to Google Meet because it comes as part of our Google Workspace account. But let me tell you, Teams is still lingering on my PC’s system tray thanks to Microsoft’s sneaky tactics when I upgraded to Windows 11. It launches automatically every time I turn on my computer. Sneaky, sneaky.

And don’t even get me started on Microsoft’s constant attempts to push their products onto us. They’re like those persistent salespeople who won’t take no for an answer! I mean, there are pop-ups in Windows 11 that try to guilt you into using Edge. Not cool, Microsoft.

Oh, and guess what? Edge periodically resets my default search engine to Bing. Can’t a guy have his preferred search engine without interference? And let’s not forget how Windows ignores your default browser choice when you click certain links. It’s like they’re saying, “Nope, you’re using Edge whether you like it or not!”

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, there’s a Bing Chat icon in my Edge sidebar and even in my Windows Start Menu. Seriously, Microsoft, take a chill pill. We get it, you want us to use your stuff, but this feels a little desperate.

Now, let’s talk numbers. Microsoft Teams is undeniably successful, boasting around 300 million daily active users as of June. But how much of that success can be attributed to the fact that it’s bundled into Office and preinstalled on every Windows 11 PC? Well, my friends, that’s a question we might soon have an answer to.
