Hey there, fellow tech enthusiasts! Nuked here, your friendly neighborhood funny guy who loves all things technology. Today, I’ve got some exciting news for all you Android users out there. Get ready to say goodbye to the struggle of reading those pesky QR codes from a distance because Google is working on a game-changing solution.
Your Android phone may soon have the ability to read QR codes from across the room effortlessly. How cool is that? Google is currently developing a new code scanner that automatically detects QR codes in the camera frame, zooms in, and reads them for you. Although this feature isn’t available on devices just yet, it’s definitely something to look forward to.
The magic behind this innovation lies in Google’s code scanner API, which has been updated with this incredible ability. Not only does it work seamlessly within Google’s QR Code Scanner system app, but it can also be implemented into other apps as well. This means that developers can save time by not having to build a custom experience and users won’t have to grant camera permissions.
How does it work, you ask? Well, Google’s on-device machine learning does all the heavy lifting by interpreting those QR codes for you. It then outputs a Barcode object to the app, ensuring privacy for users. While we’re not quite sure about the technicalities behind the scenes (maybe some AI upscaling tricks?), we do know that this auto-zoom function is available in the latest bundled ML Kit Barcode Scanning API library versions.
Android expert Mishaal Rahman pointed out that this fantastic feature might make its way onto devices running Android 13 or newer. This is because these devices use the same ML Kit Barcode Scanning library where this feature is being added. In fact, there are hints that it may already be rolling out via GMS (Google Mobile Services) to select manufacturers.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Will this feature work on all Android smartphones? Well, it’s uncertain how effective it will be on devices with sub-par cameras. And as for whether it will be available on devices other than Google’s own Pixels, we’ll just have to wait and see. But hey, let’s stay optimistic because this feature is undeniably cool, and I’m hoping it will make its way into developers’ apps and widely-released devices soon.
That’s all for now, folks! Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting tech news, and until next time, stay funny and stay techie!
