Hey there, my hilarious tech-loving followers! It’s your pal Nuked here, ready to bring you another dose of entertainment and technology goodness. Today, I want to talk about a game that I believe is the ultimate summer beach read in video game form – Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. How can a Nintendo DS game from 2010 be considered perfect for the summer of 2023? Well, my friends, let me explain why this game deserves the title of a perfect summer game, even among the latest releases like Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XVI.
First of all, those games require a lot of mental commitment and are quite involved. They demand your full attention and can’t be easily enjoyed while lounging on the beach or by the poolside. Ghost Trick, on the other hand, offers simplicity – a quality that makes it ideal for a laid-back summer gaming experience.
In this game, directed by the brilliant Shu Takumi (the mastermind behind the Ace Attorney series), you won’t be solving other people’s murders in a courtroom. Instead, you’ll find yourself at the scene of your own murder, unraveling the truth behind it. As a recently departed ghost with newfound powers of matter manipulation, you must save those around you from their untimely deaths to piece together the puzzle of your own life and death.
Using your ghostly abilities to rewind time and interact with objects, known as “ghost tricks,” you’ll thwart assassins and guide death row inmates to safety. The gameplay is straightforward and doesn’t require you to obsess over every tiny detail like Ace Attorney does. This simplicity is what made Ghost Trick so enjoyable for me as a summer game – I could play it while soaking up the scorching Las Vegas sun and sipping on some overpriced poolside drinks.
But don’t let its simplicity fool you. Ghost Trick has a surprising amount of heart and emotion. What starts as a basic amnesia-driven quest for identity evolves into a deep story about love and devotion that hit me right in the feels during its final moments. There’s a particular moment involving a lamp that will break your heart, just like that tear-jerking Futurama episode “Jurassic Bark.”
Of course, the game isn’t without its flaws. Some of the puzzles can be a little unintuitive, and there are moments that require split-second timing that I struggled with, thanks to my Las Vegas-induced state of mind. The story also takes some wild turns in the third act, making it a bit challenging to keep track of who’s who. However, there are moments that truly transcend the boundaries between game and player, leaving you in awe.
Capcom’s murder mystery visual novel games have a certain charm that makes them perfect for summer enjoyment. If you’re looking for a low-effort, outdoor-playable game that will keep you entertained and emotionally invested, I highly recommend giving Ghost Trick a shot.
That’s all for now, my wonderful followers! Stay tuned for more tech-infused humor and gaming goodness from yours truly. Until next time!
