Reddit’s Biggest Community Finds New Home on Discord and Substack

Hey there, my hilarious tech-loving followers! I’ve got some interesting news for you today. It seems like one of Reddit’s biggest communities is suggesting that its users move to other platforms. Can you guess which ones? Well, it’s none other than Discord and Substack!

Let me fill you in on the details. If you try to visit r/malefashionadvice, a community with over 5 million subscribers, you’ll be redirected to Discord and Substack instead. These alternative platforms offer a new home for fashion conversation, guides, and more. The Discord community allows members to chat, share their fashion fits and inspirations, while the Substack hosts a plethora of guides.

In an email to The Verge, one of the mods, who goes by the name Zach, shared their thoughts on the move. According to Zach, the sentiment among the community is that Discord is a far better platform. They believe that self-moderation has improved due to the high ratio of existing regulars to newcomers.

Now, let’s talk about the Substack. Zach clarified that it isn’t intended to be a subscription-based platform. Instead, it serves as a convenient place to transfer the subreddit’s guides while maintaining their formatting. The most popular guide, “Building a Basic Wardrobe,” has already garnered over 2,000 views, with most of them coming from Discord.

However, it’s important to note that both Discord and Substack are still smaller in terms of user base compared to r/malefashionadvice. The Discord community boasts over 2,000 users, while the Substack has nearly 560 subscribers.

As you may know, Reddit has been facing protests from various communities due to new API pricing. In June, over 8,000 communities went private in protest, but many have since reopened. However, r/malefashionadvice remains private, which has caught the attention of Reddit admins.

Recently, the subreddit’s moderators received a message from a Reddit admin, stating that if they don’t reopen the community within three days, the mod team would be replaced. In response, Zach explained that the community has only been closed for 13 days and that they have been actively monitoring and addressing content in their moderation queue.

Despite the potential removal of the mod team, they plan to stick around until that happens. They expect that if new mods are installed and the community reopens, not all regulars will return due to ongoing issues with bots and bad actors.

While r/malefashionadvice deals with its own challenges, other communities are also finding unique ways to protest. For instance, r/AccidentalRenaissance, a subreddit focused on images resembling Renaissance paintings, has gone private after its moderators resigned. They are encouraging users to join offshoot communities on Reddit alternatives like Kbin and Lemmy.

Similarly, r/PICS, a subreddit dedicated solely to posts about comedian John Oliver, is asking Oliver himself to join their moderation team. The ball is in his court now!

According to the Reddark tracker, more than 2,000 subreddits are still dark in protest. It’s an ongoing battle between Reddit and its communities.
