Now, I know many of you are feeling a bit down about the upcoming closure of popular third-party apps like Apollo for Reddit, rif is fun for Reddit (RIF), and BaconReader. But fear not, my friends, because there is still hope for one app to survive the storm: Narwhal for Reddit!
According to Narwhal developer Rick Harrison, who goes by the username det0ur on Reddit, Narwhal will continue to operate even after July 1st. In a post on the r/getnarwhal subreddit, Harrison assured users that the app will remain intact, with one major change – no more ads! That’s right, you’ll be able to browse Reddit without those pesky advertisements.
However, there will be some changes in store for Narwhal down the line. Harrison mentioned that he will be introducing subscriptions as part of “Narwal 2” in order to cover the new costs associated with using Reddit’s API. While the exact subscription price hasn’t been determined yet, it is expected to range between $4 and $7 per month.
Now, I can already hear the sighs of relief from all you Narwhal fans out there. It’s quite a turnaround from earlier this month when Harrison expressed uncertainty about the app’s future. In an email to The Verge, he revealed more details about how he plans to keep Narwhal alive.
Harrison stated that every user will be required to have a subscription in order to use the app. However, he did mention the possibility of a thirty to sixty-minute trial period when you first download Narwhal 2. He also mentioned that the app will undergo a complete rewrite, featuring an updated design and new functionality.
As for the costs, Harrison explained that they will be scaled per user, so he technically doesn’t need any. He plans to measure API calls per user over the next few weeks to determine the final subscription price. Unfortunately, he declined to answer whether he had reached a deal with Reddit, as the company doesn’t disclose private business discussions or agreements.
But wait, Narwhal isn’t the only app that will survive the Reddit app purge! The developer of MultiTab for Reddit announced that they will be increasing the price of their app’s subscriptions to $2.99 per month or $6.99 per year. And remember Infinity for Reddit? They also plan to make their app subscription-only, with an estimated cost of $3 per month.
While it’s certainly sad to say goodbye to beloved apps like Apollo and RIF, don’t fret too much. There are still a few third-party options that will stick around. And who knows, there may even be some last-minute surprises in store. So stay tuned, my tech-loving friends!
