Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) is making big moves in the industry, with Washington and Texas both announcing plans to require its use at EV charging stations.

Washington state is proposing a mandate that would require electric car charging companies to use NACS in order to participate in the state’s program to support electric vehicles. This would put Tesla’s technology in state and federally-funded charging sites, though the exact implementation is still being decided. Currently, the federal government requires at least four Combined Charging System (CCS) chargers at taxpayer-funded charging sites, but Washington may require that at least two of those chargers also support NACS.

Texas made a similar announcement this week, saying it would also require EV charging companies to use NACS in order to receive federal dollars. The decision was partially influenced by Ford, GM, and Rivian’s recent adoption of the standard. Rivian, a Tesla competitor, announced its intention to adopt NACS for its future vehicles, giving them access to Tesla’s extensive network of Supercharger stations.

Hyundai is also considering adopting NACS, though it depends on customer interest as Tesla’s chargers don’t charge at the higher rate supported by Hyundai’s own EV platform. Electric charging company BTC Power has also announced its intention to support NACS.
