Well hello there, my tech-loving friends! Today, I bring you news about a new feature on Amazon’s Echo Show smart displays that will make it easier for you to keep up with the local weather news. No more relying on your TV news station’s schedule – you can now watch these videos on demand with Alexa.
If you live in an area prone to harsh weather conditions like hurricanes, floods, or severe weather warnings, then you know how important it is to stay informed. And let’s be honest, local meteorologists are often the best source for this information. But what if you’re a cord-cutter or can’t tune in at the exact time of the forecast? That’s where this new feature comes in handy.
Amazon has partnered with local news channels to automatically surface their most recent weather news videos when you say “Alexa, what’s the weather?” This means that you can watch these videos whenever you like without needing a cable subscription.
Currently, this feature is live in over 60 cities across the US, including New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Washington DC, Los Angeles, and many more. However, Amazon plans to expand this feature and offer it wherever there are local news stations.
To try out this feature yourself, simply request the weather in a supported city by saying “Alexa, what’s the weather in [city name]?” This will display the usual forecast and current weather conditions on your Echo Show screen with thumbnail videos of local forecasts from multiple news stations along the bottom.
The videos won’t autoplay, so you’ll need to tap on one to start playing. They open in full screen and usually start with a few seconds of news anchor banter with the meteorologist before diving into the forecast. Some videos don’t have a time stamp, which can be a bit confusing.
If you prefer not to use voice commands, you can also access the weather by tapping the Alexa weather widget on your Show. This will bring up the same information screen, but without the videos.
It’s worth noting that this feature is currently available on Echo Show 8, Echo Show 10, Echo Show 15 devices, and is rolling out to Echo Show 5 devices. And if you’re wondering about the Fire TV Omni, unfortunately, this feature isn’t available on that device.
That’s all for now, folks! Stay safe and dry out there.
