Unlike traditional messaging, Channels is designed for one-to-many broadcasts rather than conversations. It’s like a Twitter feed, but without all the metrics and reply guys. This feature is perfect for governments, transit agencies, brands, and anyone else looking for a new place to share their important updates.

Channels is also a creator tool, allowing those with an audience to send text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. WhatsApp even plans to build payment and monetization services into channels in the future.

You can find channels by searching for them in WhatsApp or browsing the newly created directory. You’ll see their most recent updates in the Status section of the app. Privacy is a key part of the experience, with channel admins’ information kept private and only 30 days of a channel’s history stored. Admins can even block screenshots and forwards to ensure confidentiality.

While Channels isn’t end-to-end encrypted, WhatsApp is considering ways to encrypt some channels over time. This feature is similar to Telegram’s Channels and Instagram’s Broadcast Channels.

WhatsApp is constantly evolving beyond just a messaging app. In recent months, they’ve made it possible to use one account on multiple phones, added polls and shopping features, revamped their Status system, improved group chats, and more. Channels is just another way they’re bringing social media to messaging.

Channels is starting small with a launch in select organizations in Colombia and Singapore. It will come to more countries and be available to more users in the coming months. While WhatsApp remains primarily a messaging app, it’s clear they’re trying to become an all-encompassing super app.
