Musk called remote work “morally wrong” and “bullshit,” stating that it was unfair to those who couldn’t work from home. He even went as far as banning remote work at Twitter after acquiring the company. While Musk has never been a fan of work from home policies, he was more animated than usual during this interview, arguing that remote work was counter-productive.

According to Musk, people need to be more productive when they’re in person. He imposed a strict return-to-the-office policy for Tesla in June 2022, warning employees that they would lose their jobs if they refused to comply. He even required employees to spend a minimum of 40 hours at the office per week.

Before the pandemic, Tesla was more open to remote work, but after covid hit, Musk took a hard line against it and other preventative measures like mask-wearing. The company also lacked the resources to bring many of its employees back to its San Francisco offices.

During the interview with CNBC’s David Faber, Musk became extremely animated when Faber referenced the policy. Musk stated, “Get off the goddamn moral high horse with the work-from-home bullshit because they’re asking everyone else to not work from home while they do.”

Musk argued that if people who deliver food and build houses can’t work from home, neither should office workers. He called the decision “messed up” and a “moral issue.” According to Musk, if you want to work at Tesla, SpaceX or Twitter, you have to come into the office every day.
