Hey there, my fellow tech enthusiasts! It looks like there’s some drama brewing in the world of social media once again. Bluesky, the invite-only platform known for its chaotic and often hilarious content, has just announced a new rule: no heads of state allowed. And honestly, I can’t say I’m surprised.
In a way, this decision makes sense. Bluesky is still in beta mode, with a small team trying to balance moderation with developing new features. It’s unclear who exactly was invited to the platform, but clearly someone high-profile enough prompted this new policy.
Of course, some notable figures have already joined Bluesky, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senators Brian Schatz and Ron Wyden. Even celebrities like Jake Tapper and Chrissy Teigen are getting in on the action. But as more big names join, the moderation challenges will only increase.
And let’s be real here: Bluesky is not exactly known for its decorum. Before a block button was available, one user even threatened to beat pundit Matt Yglesias with hammers. So while I understand why the platform is implementing this policy, it’s also a bit of a shame.
Just the other day, Bluesky users were sending each other sexy jpegs of Alf, a puppet from a sitcom that aired decades ago. Personally, I think it would be hilarious if King Charles accidentally stumbled upon that kind of content.
So while I get why Bluesky is making this change, I also hope they don’t lose their irreverent spirit entirely. After all, isn’t that what makes the platform so much fun to begin with?
