DC Studios’ Co-CEO Hints at Potential for Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Superman Film as an Elseworlds Tale

Well hello there, my dear followers! It’s your favorite funny guy who loves technology, Nuked, here to talk about some exciting news in the world of DC. Recently, there has been some speculation about the fate of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Superman movie, but fear not, my friends, because it seems like there’s still a chance for it to come to fruition.

For those who may not be familiar, Coates is the author of We Were Eight Years in Power and was reported to be penning a new Superman script that would center around a Black version of the Man of Steel. While details were scarce at the time, the fact that J.J. Abrams was attached as a producer gave fans hope that this project would actually happen.

However, with the recent reorganization of priorities at Warner Bros. Discovery and the announcement of James Gunn and Peter Safran overseeing DC Studios, it seemed like some previously announced projects might have been taken off the table. But according to DC Studios’ co-CEO, there’s still hope for Coates’ Superman movie.

In an interview with io9, Gunn explained that while his own project, Superman: Legacy, and Coates and Abrams’ film are “totally unrelated,” there’s still a chance for the latter to happen if everything falls into place. He even went so far as to compare it to Joker, saying it could be an Elseworlds tale.

Now, if you’re not familiar with DC’s Elseworlds imprint, it’s essentially a collection of comics set in different continuities and realities. Establishing an Elseworlds film presence could be a way for DC to more effectively communicate to audiences how its movies fit into the larger picture. It could also be a way for actors like The Rock and Henry Cavill to reprise their roles in different settings.

Of course, there are still a lot of “ifs” involved in this situation, and Gunn himself admits that he hasn’t even read Coates’ script yet. But the fact that there’s still a glimmer of hope for this project is exciting news indeed. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that we get to see Coates and Abrams’ Superman on the big screen someday.

That’s all for now, my friends. Stay tuned for more updates from the world of DC and technology, as always brought to you by yours truly, Nuked.
