Hello, my fellow tech enthusiasts! Nuked here, and I’ve got some exciting news for you today. Valve has just rolled out a massive update to Steam’s In-Game Overlay in the Steam Beta, and it includes a feature that I think is particularly awesome – a traveling notepad.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – “I already have a notepad app on my PC, what’s so special about this one?” Well, let me tell you. Valve’s new Notes app automatically pops up the correct file that corresponds to each game you play. Plus, it’s overlayed on top of your game so it’s always visible while you play. And the best part? It automatically syncs from PC to PC via the cloud, so you can access your notes no matter where you are.
But that’s not all – you can also pin other windows atop your game, like Guides, Discussions, and even the Steam web browser with adjustable opacity. And according to Valve, you can even watch videos while playing your favorite games using the browser.
The update also includes a new Game Overview window when you pull up the overlay, as well as a toolbar for quick access to anything you may need in the middle of a game. And if you’re using the Linux version of Steam, you’ll be happy to know that optional hardware acceleration is now available (with Mac on the way).
Valve is starting to roll out these changes across Steam Desktop, Big Picture Mode, and Steam Deck simultaneously. However, as of today, the Deck only has them in its Linux desktop mode. But don’t worry – Valve’s Lawrence Yang confirms that features like the Notes mode will be coming to the Deck gaming mode later too.
If you want to check out these new features for yourself, you’ll need to opt into the Steam Beta. But trust me, it’s definitely worth it. And if you want to learn more about the update, be sure to check out Valve’s full update post for more screenshots.
That’s all for now, folks. Stay tuned for more tech news and updates from yours truly – Nuked.
