Hey there, fellow tech enthusiasts! It’s your favorite funny guy Nuked here, ready to talk about the latest news from the world of online gaming. Bungie, the developer of popular game Destiny 2, has announced that it will be cracking down on cheaters who use controller-spoofing hardware like XIM and Cronus.
According to a blog post from Bungie, the use of “external aides” like these devices has become a growing problem that is frustrating the community. These third-party interfaces emulate controller inputs but allow users to benefit from the precision and movement abilities of a keyboard and mouse. They can also execute scripts that give players an unfair advantage, such as enhanced aim or rapid firing.
Bungie’s policy is clear: it embraces the use of external accessibility aids that enable an experience the game designers intended but will take action against those who abuse these tools specifically to gain an advantage over other players. The devices in question include XIM, Cronus Zen, and ReaSnow S1.
The company notes that some of these devices can be an accessibility boon and that devices used explicitly as an accessibility aide to play Destiny 2 “where a player could not play otherwise” would not be a violation. However, those using them to reduce recoil or increase aim assist would be considered cheating.
While Bungie did not go into great detail on how it will detect cheaters using these devices, other online game developers have implemented their own anti-cheat systems. Activision’s Ricochet system detects infractions and issues suspensions or makes opponents invincible, while Ubisoft’s Mousetrap studies player movements and builds a model to detect cheaters by adding latency to their movements.
Bungie says it will be “evaluating all gameplay for violations,” covering not just PvP deathmatch-style gameplay but also Destiny 2’s significant cooperative PvE content since using cheats could affect players and teams participating in World First Races.
So, what do you think of Bungie’s new policy? Are you in favor of cracking down on cheaters, or do you think players should be allowed to use these devices? Let me know in the comments below!
