Google has announced that it will be shutting down Currents, which was meant to replace Google Plus for G Suite in 2019. But don’t worry, Google has a plan to move everyone over to Spaces, which is like a Slack channel or Discord room within Google Chat.

Google says that they want to make it easier for users to work without having to navigate to a separate destination. They promise that Spaces will be integrated into Gmail soon and will have new capabilities like support for larger communities and leadership communication, advanced search tools, and content moderation features.

But what about Currents? Well, Google plans to start winding down the platform in 2023. However, they will be turning off rarely used features starting in Q1 2022. Workspace administrators will be kept up-to-date on future changes and the migration timeline.

It’s worth noting that Currents hasn’t received much attention from Google. There were only three blog posts about it on the Workspace Updates site, and it was removed from the main list of apps in November 2021. It’s a bit of a double-whammy since this is the second time Google has shut down a product named Currents. Before the current iteration, it was a magazine app.

While this news may be disappointing for some, it’s not entirely unexpected. As Ars Technica points out, this is essentially the second time Google has shut down Google Plus. But hey, at least Spaces seems like one of Google’s new favorite projects.
