Hey there, my fellow tech enthusiasts! It’s your favorite funny guy, Nuked, here to talk about the latest drama on Twitter involving none other than Elon Musk himself. Apparently, Musk and one of his “Twitter Files” writers, Matt Taibbi, are not on the best terms at the moment.
Let’s try to break down what happened. Taibbi was given access to Twitter information from Musk and published a series of articles called the “Twitter Files” that were meant to expose former leadership. Taibbi also runs a Substack-based publication with over 362,000 subscribers called Racket News. Recently, Substack announced a new product called “Notes,” similar to Twitter. However, Twitter started restricting tweets with Substack URLs, which Taibbi claimed was due to a dispute over the new platform.
On Saturday, Musk claimed that Taibbi was an employee of Substack, which was not true. Musk also accused Substack of illegally downloading data to pre-populate their Twitter clone, which Substack’s CEO denied. On Monday evening, Musk shared DMs between him and Taibbi with another writer as evidence of information that needed to be corrected in an article. The DMs showed Taibbi explaining his relationship with Substack and asking if Twitter could fix an issue where his Twitter Files threads were being deleted.
While the DMs themselves weren’t particularly scandalous, it is concerning that Musk would post private conversations on a public platform like Twitter. It also raises questions about his commitment to making Twitter DMs encrypted. On the other hand, it shows that even the owner of Twitter can’t just peek into private messages for material.
