Is Asus ROG Ally the Real Deal or an April Fools’ Day Prank?

Hello there, my tech-savvy followers! Today is April Fools’ Day, and we all know that means it’s the perfect time for companies to pull some pranks. However, Asus has surprised us by announcing a handheld gaming PC that might not be a joke after all. The Asus ROG Ally has been revealed in a launch video, and it looks too good to be a prank.

According to Asus, the ROG Ally is powered by a customized Ryzen APU from AMD and runs on Windows 11. It boasts the fastest AMD APU yet, making it a potential rival to Valve’s Steam Deck. The screen promises “full HD gaming,” and it has a dual-fan design for quiet operation. The standard setup of dual analog sticks, left-mounted D-pad, and four face buttons are visible, along with additional buttons around the screen to access menus and settings.

The trailer even shows real games like High On Life, Moving Out, and WRC Generations, which is unusual for an April Fools’ Day prank. Best Buy has a sign-up page for those interested in pre-order information. The ROG Ally also offers the option to “experience Ally’s full potential” by plugging in the ROG XG Mobile eGPU while streaming games to a TV.

While the Steam Deck has been a successful attempt at making PC gaming portable, other competitors like the Ayaneo 2 or Switch-like machines from GPD and OneXPlayer haven’t quite hit the mark. They’ve relied on an AMD 6800U chipset instead of a custom design and lack the right combination of horsepower and efficiency that we want to see from handheld gaming machines.

The ROG Ally seems fully designed and ready to roll out as a high-powered entry into the portable gaming market. It’s certainly more realistic than Asus ROG’s April Fools’ Day 2022 joke, the “Smart Lens” for eye-controlled gestures. Of course, Asus is also the company that just released the ROG Flow Z13 Acronym portable, which defies all belief and understanding.

As we wait for April 2nd to roll around, we’ll keep an eye on whether the ROG Ally is still standing. Regardless, Asus seems ready to take on the Steam Deck in this category sooner or later. What do you think of the ROG Ally? Let me know in the comments below!
